Vehicle Check-Up For The Holiday Travels

“This time of year when many families will be spending hours on the road, it is especially important to make sure your vehicle is functioning properly,” said Mike Myers, general manager of Hudiburg Chevrolet, Buick, GMC. “Taking just a few simple steps before your trip will ensure that your vehicle and your family are safe.”

Here are some tips for getting your car through your holiday travels:
  • Inspect the engine cooling system: Vehicles overheat in the winter months, too. Ensuring that the cooling system is in tip-top shape can prevent severe engine and transmission damage. Many dealerships offer these inspections at no charge.
  • Have the battery tested: If the battery is more than a few years old, consider having your battery tested or replaced. Additionally, take a moment to make sure the battery terminals are corrosion-free and that all connections are tight. If there is corrosion on your battery, you can use baking soda and a toothbrush to scrub it off.
  • Check fluid levels: Check the level of coolant in the radiator, engine and transmission oils, brake fluid and windshield wiper fluids, topping off if levels are low. It’s always a good idea to have the oil changed before heading off on a road trip, and consider bringing a gallon of winter windshield washer fluid with you in your trunk as well.
  • Inspect tires: Do a visual check of all of your tires for uneven tread or excessive wear, including the spare. It’s also a good idea to make sure they’re inflated to manufacturer recommendations before you start your trip. Most tire pressure recommendations can be found in your owner’s manual.
  • Do a quick check of lights, bulbs and wiper blades: Burned-out headlights severely affect your visibility and burned-out tail lights impact your communication with vehicles behind you. Make sure that all of your lights are functioning properly, and do a quick test to see if your wiper blades need to be replaced. Each of these steps will maximize visibility and help your family stay safe.
